Our Vision

A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

About Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity

Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God's love into action by building homes, community and hope.  Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.  Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

All Are Welcome

Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity has an open door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any other distinctions that too often divide people.  In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion.  As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Mission Statement

The mission of Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity is to improve lives in our community by building safe and affordable housing in partnership with God’s people.

How We Do It

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials and the precedes from our ReStore, we build simple, decent and affordable houses with the help of the future homeowners - our partner family. These houses are sold to partner families at an affordable cost and financed with an affordable mortgage.

A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Homes are built by forming a partnership with the future homeowner family who must meet a threefold criteria:

  • There must be a need for decent housing.
  • Families must have an income between 35% and 80% of the median income for Montcalm County, adjusted for family size.
  • The family must demonstrate a willingness to partner with us by working a minimum of 250 “Sweat Equity” hours per adult member of the household. A willingness to partner will also mean being a good ambassador for Montcalm County Habitat for Humanity in the community.

The combination of cost reducing volunteer labor and a zero or low interest mortgage is what makes the home affordable to low-income families. The mortgage payments are recycled through a building fund to build more homes for more families in need.
